In the bitter winter of 2008, piercing cold swept through the season. Piles of laundry had accumulated at home, overflowing two basins. As I handed a bar of soap to my grandmother, I caught sight of a scene etched forever in my memory. Her hands, red and swollen from frigid water, were criss‑crossed by deep dry cracks. Tiny blood marks dotted her rough thumbs and fingertips, the fissures glowing faintly red in the cold wind.
Sorrow and shock welled up inside me and lingered for a long time.
